Two days in Rome: a walking and metro itinerary from Termini

Rome is best explored on foot, and from the Termini area the main sights of the historic centre all lie within a radius of about 2 km. Here's a two-day itinerary designed for those staying near the station. Distances are approximate.

Day 1: ancient Rome and the historic centre

• Colosseum and Imperial Forums: from Termini by metro line B the Colosseum is about 10 minutes away (about 25 minutes on foot).
• Roman Forum and Piazza Venezia: continue on foot from the Colosseum as far as the Altare della Patria.
• Pantheon and Piazza Navona: on foot from Piazza Venezia, as an afternoon itinerary.
• Trevi Fountain: about 18-20 minutes' walk from the guesthouse; ideal at the end of the day.

Day 2: basilicas, museums and green spaces

• Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore: about a 10-minute walk from the guesthouse.
• National Roman Museum, Palazzo Massimo: right next to Termini, one of the most important collections of ancient Roman art.
• Piazza della Repubblica: with the Fountain of the Naiads and the Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli.
• Villa Borghese and Piazza di Spagna: the park for a stroll, then Piazza di Spagna (about 20-22 minutes' walk from here, or by metro line A).

If you'd like to add the Vatican, you can get there on metro line A (Ottaviano or Cipro stops): it's best to set aside half a day for it on its own.

Practical tips

• Book tickets in advance for the most popular sites, such as the Colosseum and the Vatican Museums.
• Bring comfortable shoes: much of the itinerary is done on foot.
• Mix metro and walking: the metro is handy in the hottest hours or when you're tired.
